Shem, Ham and Japeth

Genesis 10:1 "This is the account of Shem, Ham, and Japeth, Noah's sons, who themselves had sons after the flood."

Noah's three sons had a big task before them. The earth was forever changed after the flood. It would be up to Shem, Ham and Japeth to rebuild the nations through their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and so on.

These are the sons (or nations) that come from Shem:
Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram

Elam is the father of the countries: Bulgaria, Czechoslavakia, Yugoslavia
Asshur is the father of the countries: Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey
Arphaxad is the father of all the: Hebrews, who Abraham comes from whose son is Isaac, and grandson's name is Jacob: who is the father of these nations: France, Germany, Palestine, Israel, Finland, Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Great Britian, and the USA.

Psalm 105:23 "Then Israel entered Egypt; Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham

These are the sons (or nations) that come from Ham: (the youngest son of Noah)
Cush, Mizraim, Put and Canaan

Just by knowing a little bit of history now you might be able to figure out which son of Noah's you are descended from...and if your lucky you even might be so mixed that your descended from more than one of Noah's sons.

Sons of Noah

Genesis 9:18-19 "The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japeth. (Ham was the father of Canaan). These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth."

Can you imagine it? The whole population of our world comes from Noah's three son's. Each son had a wife and together they had children, and those children had children, and so on and so on, until each nation was large and spread out over the earth again.

Each son gave birth to different race's of people. Some fair-skinned and some dark skin and some medium skin toned. Each person different and unique. Some with brown hair-brown eyed, some with red hair - green eyes, some with blond hair-blue eyes, some with black hair-brown eyes, and as each generation passed these types became mixed. It is very rare in today's world to find someone who is of just one race anymore. We are all, especially in America, a mix of many different races. We are each beautiful and unique in God's eyes and those who love us.

Do you know your family history? Of what type of people you come from or why you have the color of eyes and hair that you have? Do you wonder if your a descendant of one of Noah's son's-whether that is Shem, Ham or Japeth? In the next few posts we will talk more about what type of people originated from the three son's of Noah to give you a brief look into where you come from.

God's Covenant with Noah

Genesis 9:12-13 " And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth."

The rainbow is God's promise to never flood the entire earth and destroy man and animal again. Each time it rains have you noticed the beautiful rainbow set in the sky among the clouds? It shines out to us as a reminder of the promise God made to Noah and his family and for every generation after that.

God remembers this covenant each time the rainbow appears in the sky. And it should be a reminder to all of us today also of our history, what happens when we disobey God, of how merciful our Lord is with us, and how He longs to have a very personal relationship with each of us.

Noah Comes Out of the Ark

Genesis 8: 15-16 "Then God said to Noah, "Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives."

The waters have receded now, the land is dried up and able to be walked upon again. So out comes Noah, his family, and every living creature he has upon the ark. Noah builds an alter and offers up pleasing burnt offerings to the Lord.

The Lord is pleased with the aroma and says in his heart that he will never again curse the ground because of man or destroy all living creatures as He had done.

So begins the repopulation of the earth, among all the animals and Noah's family too. Each animal of its kind who now move of their own accord to parts that befit their needs. Each male and female animal will reproduce and have babies of its kind to help repopulate the earth now as all animals are gone from the earth except those that came out of the ark.

Noah is told to be fruitful and multiply. The bible doesnt specifically say if Noah had other sons or daughters other than Shem, Ham and Japeth; for it is these sons who would build family lines that would increase upon the earth as time went on. All the races and peoples of the earth come from Noah's three sons.

150 Days

For forty days the flood kept coming upon the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. So begins the saga of the flood and Noah's journey.

The waters rose and covered over the mountain tops of a depth of more than twenty feet and every living thing that was not upon the Ark at this time perished. All birds, livestock, wild animals, creatures that swarmed and all of mankind too.

The waters flooded the earth for 150 days, that is about four and half months. God remembers Noah and the Ark. GOD sets a wind over the earth to help the waters dry up and recede from the land.

Genesis 8: 3-4 "The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down, and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Building of the Ark

Genesis 6:14-16 "So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. Make a roof for it and finish the ark to within 18 inches of the top. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks."

The Ark was 3 stories high! Just the sheer size of this ark is amazing. I feel like only Noah and his sons, wife and sons' wives helped with the building of this ark...it would have taken a long time to complete this.

But Noah obeyed as commanded and did everything just as God wanted it done. And God because he found Noah and his family righteous in that generation told him to "Go into the Ark, you and your whole family".

Seven days from the time Noah and his family entered the Ark, God sent the rains that flooded the entire earth for 40 days and 40 nights.

Noah was 600 years old at the time the floodwaters came upon the earth.

Genesis 7:13-16 "On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark. They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings. Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark. The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord shut him in."

Before the Flood

Genesis 6:9-10 "This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, Japeth.

God did not like what he saw of the earth and its people. For there was much corruption and violence and HE decided to destroy both the people and the earth and every living creature upon the earth.

There is however one thing God did. He saved Noah, his wife, sons and their wives along with two of every living creature upon the earth and sheltered them upon the Ark, which Noah was required to build.

Genesis 6:18-20 "But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark-you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you. You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.

And Noah did just that...he did everything God commanded of him.
